The broken record is great to use with children, and can be used with adults as well. Do you, by any chance, have someone in your life who rants at you about something you do or don’t do? Not to call someone a pig, my favorite bumper sticker was given to me from my daughter, Kathleen: “Never try to teach a pig to sing; it’s a waste of time and annoys the pig!”
When someone is stuck in their opinion and won’t listen to your feelings, there is no point in trying to educate them. Use the broken record (SW #37) on them-or-fog them (sort of agree. SW #24)
Broken Record response, repeated: “We’ve talked about this before.”
Fogging response:
A: “You should lose some weight.”
B: “I agree.”
A: “Well, it just isn’t healthy to be overweight.”
B: “You could be right”
A: “You should go to Weight Watchers.”
A: “I could do that.”
B: “Well, I just want what’s best for you.”
A: “I’m sure you do!”
The broken record and fogging help you to hold the line, and can be very annoying to the other person. That’s their problem, not yours!
