#77: HOW MANY BLESSINGS DO YOU HAVE TO COUNT?

When I was a teenager, I had exploded in front of my parents, and had taken my sobbing self to my room, thrown myself on the bed. My father came in, sat by my side for awhile, then spoke, “Darling when you get through feeling sorry for yourself, try counting your blessings.” What impressed me the most was that I didn’t know where to start!

My Islamic friend, Suzan, often ends a statement with, “Thanks God!” For example, I asked how her business was going. She replied, “It is very busy, thanks God!” Wanting to be mindful of my many blessings, I decided to adopt her choice of words: I had teeth to brush in the AM, “Thanks God!” Before I ate my granola, “Thanks God!” My car started in the morning, “Thanks, God!” All day, everything I could’ve taken for granted was acknowledged with, “Thanks God.”

One simply cannot feel sorry for oneself when you are aware of your MANY blessings. Did you say “Thanks God” for the sight that enabled you to read this?

I love to write and I love to teach—thanks God for this place to do both of them!
