#7: A REAL MISTAKE IS ONE FROM WHICH YOU LEARN NOTHNG.
I’t ok to make mistakes. Were you raised under that umbrella, because I was not. At the age of 81, I have made more mistakes than Hines has beans! It is from many of those mistakes (some of which I repeated innumerable times,) that I learned the most valuable lessons.
I used to verbally pound myself to pieces when I made a mistake, referring to myself as “stupid,” “dummie,” “idiot,” or worse. Then I read something about the affect of negatives messages on my brain. I was programming myself for failure. So, being an avid fan of Winnie the Pooh, I switched to saying, “Silly ol’ bear!” when I make a mistake.
Mistakes are the way we learn. In sailing, you come about (turn the boat around,) by changing the sail’s position. If you turn it too little, your boat doesn’t respond. If you turn it too much, water comes into the boat. If too much water comes into your boat you capsize. From each mistake (even capsizing!) you learn how to navigate a boat. Your life is like that boat; learn from your mistakes and don’t take making a mistake out on your already pounded self.
